The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is seen by many as an early indication of Oscar success. Get the audience and the critics buzzing here, and you are more likely to get the Academy buzzing.

 

Way To Blue wanted to see not only what were the most discussed films at this year’s festival but also which studio won the highest share of voice. We’ve crowned the Festival Hero and looked at which Twitter accounts were discussing TIFF the most.  We’ve also used our Intent-to-View Methodology to see which movie was the one that people were actually talking about seeing as a result of TIFF.

 

Biopics and real life/event-based movies; and dystopian, or sci-fi films proved most discussed during the festival.  The buzz around I Saw The Light saw it leading the charge with Equals, High Rise, Freeheld, Colonia and The Danish Girl all taking spots in the global top 15.

 

In Colonia, which stole the Intent-to-View buzz globally, audiences can see Emma Watson in a more serious and drama-filled role, breaking away from her Harry Potter roots. Tom Hiddleston, already a social media hero, was the runaway festival hero with 37,162 mentions. His two films, High Rise and I Saw The Light both premiered at the festival and are the most discussed and fourth most discussed films at the festival for a global audience respectively.
