02/01/2018 My Year in Film
The global box office hit a record high of $39.9Bn in 2017, an increase of 3% on the previous year (data courtesy of ComScore). The growth was fueled by another year of exceptionally strong performance at the International box office – which delivered $28.8Bn in ticket sales. The US Domestic market didn’t have a bad year either, chalking up it’s third best ever box office performance at $11.1Bn.
While franchises always dominate at the box office, 2017 was a big win for original story-telling with breakout hits like Baby Driver, Get Out, Dunkirk and Hidden Figures capturing the imagination (and the wallets) of audiences and in many cases significantly out-performing expectations.
2017 truly was a great year to work in the industry I love. In a small corner of Century City, Los Angeles my team at Way To Blue US broke a few records too. We tripled in size to 30 people last year and worked on more than 50 films for 12 different studios – delivering research, strategy, creative, media planning and digital marketing campaigns.
